Laugh Riots: Funny Ecards

By Herbert Reich

Electronic greeting cards are called e-cards. These are typically images or pictures along with personal messages and they can be sent by email. Compared to paper greeting cards e-cards are definitely more versatile, this is due to the digital nature of the contents that enables them to be sent to more than one recipient at once. E-cards can be personalized in many ways and also they can be saved on media storage devices such as flash drives or compact discs or in the computer itself. Since no paper is used to make these e-cards they are more environmentally friendly too.

The start of e-cards happened near the same time that the Internet was started. In 1995, e-card greetings were started by E-Cards.com, they had wildlife, and nature photos on them. In 1996 in February the popularity of e-cards was in full swing especially Valentine's Day e-cards provided by Sony Entertainment and Infobahn.com. During the 1990s and the early years of 2000 the e-cards continued to climb in popularity, and even wound up being a lucrative web-based enterprise. One of the biggest websites that provide free e-cards is called BlueMountain.com. E-cards are usually free and are to this day popular. But there those websites that charge members a fee for either premium cards or for just sending them, these fees can be charged either yearly or monthly.

Ecards started as postcards, using non-moving or static images. These images are accompanied with personalized greeting messages. Then, ecards evolved into flash animation. Flash animation is based on 2-dimensional vector animation, which used scripting language. The flash animation is more cartoon-style, but can be realistic and advanced. Ecards with flash animation usually contain soundtrack, with speech and music or audio sounds. One example is a wedding ecard with the sound of church bells. Flash animation can include interactivity, for example, recipient can click on an image of a wrapped present to reveal a greeting message. Nowadays, flash animated ecards are still one of the most commonly used formats.

Another choice of e-cards is the video style e-cards. This style of e-card puts video and text together to show the greeting messages to the one receiving the e-card. These e-cards take more production time, real actors, and a budget. A simpler and inexpensive alternative to the sending of e-cards is using one's cell phone to send a mobile version of e-cards. Users of mobile phones will be required to download their e-cards onto their phones from a cell phone network using WAP. After downloading, the e-cards can then be sent to other cell phone owners using MMS. The mobile version of e-cards came out in 2003 and was created by Mgreetings (a Dutch company). The cell phone users may have a charge for downloading and or sending these mobile e-cards, as per their cell phone provider.

People love to send e-cards for many types of celebrations or occasions. Some of the many occasions are weddings, birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas, friendship, Mother's Day, and more. E-cards can also be full of humor and are available on many websites. These humorous e-cards usually have animated figures with sounds that are funny and messages that have been personalized. For everyone and every occasion, funny e-cards are available such as office jokes, funny political, and humorous holiday greetings. Since these e-cards are designed environmentally safe, they are perfect not only for everyone, but also anytime and for any reason.
