Common Oak and Durmast Oak

The red oak is a native of North America, where it grows in mixed stands, with other broad-leaved woody plants, from the 35th parallel northward to Canada. It is a robust tree, reaching a height of 35 metres. When grown in the open, it develops a broad cro,A1 with strong branches. The bark remains smooth and grey-green until an advanced age. The lobed leaves turn dark red in autumn, hence its name. The acorns mature in the autumn of the second year. They are not as popular a food with forest animals as other acorns, because of the sharp point at their tip.

It grows to an age of 600 to 800 years and, in the open, develops a huge trunk and broad crown. Under ideal conditions, heights of 40 metres can be attained: Up to about 20 to 30 years of age the bark is smooth and grey, in older trees it tends to become blackish-grey and deeply furrowed. The leaves are alternate with a lobed margin.

Because of its characteristics, it is sometimes planted in Europe for forestry purposes and is also a very popular ornamental for parks and gardens. It is more shade-tolerant than European oaks. The timber is heavy, with red-brown heartwood, and is used for the same purpose as European oaks, though its quality is not as good.

The wych elm is distributed throughout most of Europe, from Spain northward to the 65th parallel, and eastward as far as the Urals. It is found both in lowland country and high up in the mountains, even above the 1000 metre mark, most frequently in moist ravines, alongside streams and in scree woods with rich soil. The wych elm is a robust tree growing up to a height of 40 metres and developing a long, cylindrical bole topped by a rounded crown. The hark is ridged with shallow longitudinal furrows.

Much like the common oak, the durmast oak tends to be somewhat smaller with a narrower crown. It has a similar range, but does not extend as far cast to regions with severe winters. Unlike the common oak it is a tree of the hills and is found at elevations up to 700 metres. It does not require soil as rich as the common oak, and even tolerates stony, acid soils. However, it requires plenty of light to thrive well. The durmast oak reaches a height of 30 to 40 metres, and its trunk is straighter than, but not as thick as, that of the common oak. The flowers, appearing 10 to 14 days later than those of the common oak, resemble them, but the female flowers, unlike those of its relative, are pressed close to the twig. The mature acorns are borne on very short stalks close to the twig.

The wych elm is a tree that requires partial shade, and is marked by rich natural reproduction from seed, as well as a good growth of stump suckers. At lower elevations, it is often attacked by a fungus disease that causes branches to die out. The medium heavy timber, with brownish heartwood, is used to make furniture, waggons, and other products.

The shape and the structure of the leaves of conifers, called needles, are different. They are narrow, elongate and either rhomboid, semi-circular or elliptical in cross-section in order to limit transpiration as much as possible.

Between the xylem and the phloem, there is a thin layer, called the cambium, consisting of several layers of thin-walled cells which, during the growth period, rapidly divide to form new wood on the inside and new phloem on the outside.

The primary vein divides the blade into two, generally equal, halves. In some woody plants, however, the halves are not identical, especially at the base, and these are termed asymmetric (elm, hackberry). In other species the leaf may have several veins branching out from the base (maples); such leaves are usually palmately lobed.

The strip of compact summer wood is easily distinguished from the strip of the following year's spring wood so that on a stump we can clearly see the yearly growth, in the form of annual rings, and thus easily determine the age of the felled tree.

The pine leaves live for a shorter time than those of the spruce; and leaves of a spruce growing at low elevations live longer than those growing in harsh conditions.

The process is slow and gradual, and the tree sappears unchanged. Only the amount of needles on the ground beneath i serves as an indication of its shedding rate.

For apricots there must be some shelter from cold winds. There must be protection from the spring frosts, and there must be sufficient depths to the soil. Some people say that the spring frosts not only kill the blossom but damage the young wood and so start the die- back.

The trees grown by me have never been fed and they have made tremendous growth. They presumably get what they need from the compost-fed crops nearby. Where soils arc acid, carbonate of lime must be given, so as to bring the pH to 7.

Blackberries, of course, grow on their own roots and are not budded or grafted on to stocks. Blackberries grow very well indeed on the compost system. It pays to apply straw a foot deep or more not only between the rows but among the plants and thus there is no hoeing or forking to do. Such straw should be applied at the end of the first year, once it is known that the canes are growing well.

Each early March a fish manure with a 6 per cent potash content should be applied at the rate of about 3 oz, to the sq. yard, or 6 cwt. per acre. This should be put on top of the straw and be allowed to trickle through or wash in. If it is thought the canes are not growing clay, however, I prefer to plant early in the spring. This results in the least amount of loss.

Large Early Mount Gauiet Moorpark is perhaps the most famous of the true English apricots. Fruits largish brown-orange-yellow with brownish red on sunny side. Season late Aug.-early Sept.

The best species of trees for this purpose are various pines, larches, and, in sub-tropical regions, members of the genera Agathis, Shorea and Canarium. Similar methods are used in the case of certain tropical, broad- leaved trees to obtain caoutchouc and latex, which are of importance in the rubber, textile and food industries - trees of the genera Hevea, Castilloa, Mimusops, Achras, etc.

In the furniture industry, it is mainly the wood of broad-leaved trees such as oak, elm, walnut, ash, beech, cherry arid certain tropical exotics that is used to make the finer, more delicate pieces. When to Put Orchids Outside

In countries with a temperate climate, it is safe to place those orchids that will benefit from the air outside in their pots by the end of late spring or the beginning of early summer.

The shade-loving genera can be accommodated beneath shade-cloth houses, which are open at the sides to allow air to flow through. This is the method used by commercial nurseries. Alternatively, the plants can be naturalized on trees in the garden. Here, once in position, they can grow into magnificent specimens with the minimum of care.

If you do not have a garden, your orchids can still enjoy the advantages of being outside for the summer. They are equally at home on a patio or even a balcony, provided they are shaded from direct sun during most of the day. Ideally, select a spot that is reached by either the early morning, the late afternoon or the evening sun only. This will ensure that the plants are in the shade during the hottest part of the day. Standing them against a white-washed wall will give them the added benefit of light reflected from behind. A roof garden may have just this situation.

By the end of the summer, usually coaching the end of early autumn, re nights become colder as the weather teriorates, and it is time to bring your plants back inside. Do this before the int frost appears, unless the orchids are bell protected by tree foliage above Vim, in which case they may stay out a ink longer, especially if the flower ikes are not yet showing.

Any orchids growing on a balcony outside your window may have to be brought inside for watering if surplus water may cause a problem. Avoid standing the orchids directly on the ground, where the pots will be subjected to infestation by all types of ground-dwelling pests. To prevent the orchids from being blown off their bench during very windy weather, it is a good idea to place a small railing around the edge.

Tidy up your orchids at the same time, removing all old bracts on the cymbidiums, and cutting off any broken or brown leaves. Pull out any weeds that have grown in the compost, including mosses and ferns; these may look nice growing with the orchids, but they will clog up the compost, making watering more difficult.

The yellow Promenaea xanthina has been reintroduced on to this tree in its native Brazil where it naturally grows on the lower trunk of trees at high altitude in cloud-filled, humid rainforests.

The aspen is a forest tree, occurring widely throughout the whole of Europe, and extending beyond the Arctic Circle in the north. In central Europe it grows in lowland and on mountains up to and above 1000 metres; it is most plentiful, however, in hill country, coppice forests and forests which are clear-felled.

It reaches heights of 25 to 30 metres and has a sparse, highly placed crown. The bark is smooth and coloured greenish grey, but old trees have fissured blackish bark at the lower part of the trunk. The buds on the twigs are lustrous-brown and sharply pointed. The aspen is a dioecious species (male and female flowers on separate trees). It flowers in March and the tiny seeds, imbedded in cottonwool-like hairs, are shed in late May. The leaf stalk is long and flattened, and even a slight breeze sets the leaf in motion. The aspen is a light-demanding tree and does not require rich soil.

Of the Asian cypresses, the one most commonly found in Europe is the sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera Sieb et Zuec.), which has a great number of ornamental forms.

The twigs are yellow-brown to brown, the buds covered with a layer of balsam resin. The flowers and fruit are very much like those of the white poplar. The balsam poplar is a light-demanding tree that requires considerable moisture.

In Europe it is cultivated mainly in parks for its ornamental, light-coloured bark and pleasant scent in spring. Planted occasionally in hill country is the western balsam poplar (Populus trichocarpa Torr. et Grey), a native of western North America. A northern Chinese poplar (Populus simouii Carr.), a native of China and Manchuria, is more frequently planted as a street and shade tree in European cities.

It is an attractive ornamental, with whitish bark, and nearly rhombic, 10 cm long leaves, which appear on the tree in early spring.

Common names are Garden Beet, Beetroot (Eng.); Betterave Potaere, Betterave a Salade (Fr.); Remolachia (Sp.); Rote Bete, Rube (Ger.); Kroot, Rode Biet (Neth.); Chakundar (Ind.); Bit (Mal. and Indon.).

Three main forms are cultivated, mainly distinguished by their leaf shape and colour: (a) Dark-green, oval or almost round leaves; commonly referred to as B. alba. (b) Red, oval-round leaves, 5-12 cm in length, stems red; often referred to as B. rubra. (c) Dark-green, cordate leaves.

Native to tropical Asia, possibly India or China, now widely grown in many tropical regions. Introduced to tropical West Africa comparatively recently.

Now widely cultivated throughout the tropics, mainly in the Caribbean area, including the West Indies, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominica; Central and South America, Hawaii; West Africa (particularly southern Nigeria and Cameroun); and tropical Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia and the South Pacific Islands).

A biennial glabrous herb, normally grown as an annual. Roots: including hypocotyl, rounded or tapering, red, enlarged with food reserves. Stems: conical, condensed above hypocotyl. Leaves: in rosettes, dark red or green, ovate or cordate. Inflorescence: of 3-4 flowered cymes, on spikes up to 120 cm in height, formed in the second year of growth if the environmental conditions are favourable. Flowers: perianth of 5 segments; stamens 5; stigmas 3. Fruits: an aggregate, formed by the cohesion of 2 or more fruits. The calyx continues to grow after fertilization, becoming woody and enclosing the seed. Seeds: small, kidney-shaped, brown; weight of 1000 seeds = 16 g.

Moist soil conditions are generally essential but the roots are sensitive to excessive soil water. A high soil organic content is req. uired for optimum growth and sandy loam soils are usually suitable. The root system is fairly tolerant to alkaline soil conditions but sensitive to acidity. A pH of 6.0-6.8 is considered satisfactory, values lower than 5.0 reduce yields significantly. Mulching reduces the rate of water loss. In addition to the provision of an adequate supply of essential minerals in the soil before sowing, young plants usually benefit from additional applications of nitrogen during the period of active growth. Boron deficiency causes the formation of internal black spots in the root tissues and may be corrected by applying 10-30 kg/ha of borax. Beetroot also responds favourably to applications of sodium chloride in the region of 300-500 kg/ha. High temperatures, over 25C, adversely affect growth and roots are likely to show distinct zonal markings as a result of high soil temperatures. Plants grown in moderate rainfall conditions are unlikely to require additional water but irrigation is required during dry periods to maintain a regular rate of root development. An elevation of more than 600 m is normally required for successful root development, plants grown at sea level are unlikely to produce economic yields.

Propagation is normally by means of small corms, as for Colocasia, although the tops of young plants are often removed and inserted as cuttings. Rooted cuttings or corms are planted on low ridges 75-90 cm apart, 90 cm between plants; the more vigorous forms may require a wider spacing. Approximately 2.5-5.0 t/ha of corms are required for planting. Earthing up is considered advantageous during the early part of the growing period, possibly followed by mulching during hot weather.

Harvesting of the young shoots may normally begin 55-70 days from trans- planting, continuing at regular intervals for approximately six months. The shoots removed are normally 15-25 cm in length; flowering shoots should also be removed to encourage continued leaf production. Yield: Variable but, depending on the cultivar characteristics and the frequency of harvest, single plants may yield up to 1.5 kg of fresh leaves and young shoots over a period of 180 days.

Mature corms do not deteriorate if left in the ground and it is a common practice to harvest corms for immediate consumption as required. Considerable care should be taken to avoid damage to the corms at harvest time since this may lead to rapid deterioration. Corms may be stored in well-ventilated conditions for up to 180 days. Storage at 7C and 80% relative humidity has been found to maintain corms in good condition, without loss of eating quality, for about 120-130 days. Traditional pit storage is generally more satisfactory than ventilated room or barn storage.

The leaves, in addition to the roots, are often used as a cooked vegetable; the roots are widely used in salads and in the preparation of pickles and chutney.

Orchid Temperatures

It is often mistakenly thought that orchids need a constant temperature in which to grow, yet nowhere in nature does the temperature remain the same both night and day, summer and winter. Wherever orchids originate in the world, there exists a temperature fluctuation, and in cultivation orchids can withstand considerable temperature differences. Indeed, these variations are often the trigger that initiates flowering and regulates growth.

In more severe cases, direct sun will burn the leaves, causing black areas where the sun's rays have destroyed the leaf cells.

Insufficient light, on the other hand, will create dark green leaves that can become over-extended and limp. The aim should be to give your orchids just enough light to produce a good mid-green, healthy foliage and pseudo bulbs that will develop flower spikes at the right time.

The minimum temperature is that experienced on winter nights, and indoors some form of artificial heating will be required to maintain that. A drop of a few degrees is not going to cause any harm, but if the winter night temperature is consistently lower by more than 3C (5F), the plants will suffer. Also, in colder temperatures other problems can arise, such as molds and damp spots on the orchids.

The summer daytime maximum should not exceed 30C (86F), which is a comfortable temperature for the orchids. Above this, the plants will inevitably become stressed, and growth will slow down and may even come to a stop. Overheating can be difficult to prevent in a greenhouse and needs to be controlled by sufficient ventilation, shading and damping down.

After their winter's rest, orchids commence their new growth in the spring. Repot the plants as soon as this happens and before the new roots start at the base.

In a greenhouse or heated conservatory, it becomes easier to contra:, light levels, and in the winter the orchids will benefit from full light with no risk of burning from the sun s weak rays.

Orchids can be fed at all ages, from young seedlings and propagations to adult plants. Feed only healthy plants, however, because they have the ability to absorb and convert the chemicals. Do feed plants that are sick or have lost their roots. New roots that appear may be burnt by the residue remaining in the compost (growing medium). For the same reason, do not feed orchids that are resting. Their roots will have become inactive, and the chemicals will remain in the compost where they may cause harm as the plant sans into growth in the spring.

In species which have a high consumption of water the surface roots extend beyond the dimensions of the circle drawn by the crown - as much as fifteen to twenty-five metres from the trunk of a mature aspen, poplar; ash, etc. The depth to which roots grow also varies markedly according to the species.

On the bark we can often see small round or slit-like patches that are slightly raised, and different in colour, from the surrounding bark. These are called lenticels and serve as a path for the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the living cells inside the trunk and branches.

Inorganic Composts for Orchids

In addition to the organic composts (growing mediums), there are a number of man-made materials that provide synthetic alternatives. These are cheap and easy to use, and have the advantage in that they will not decompose and therefore cause the roots to rot.

These materials include Rockwool, which is produced for the horticultural industry from spun volcanic pumice. Rockwool looks like discoloured cotton wool, and the surface is sometimes stained green with an algae that grows in response to the nutrients.

On average, orchids need repotting about once every two years. Older established plants may be left for longer, especially when they do not outgrow their pots, while young plants need to be moved on every six months or so in order to maintain a steady rate of growth.

It is available in two forms: absorbent and non-absorbent. The first retains much more water around the roots, which suits some orchids, while a drier compost is provided by the nonabsorbent type. Many growers like to mix the two together to provide an ideal medium that holds sufficient water over an extended period, but has the capacity to support pockets of air. Rockwool is poured lightly into the pot and needs no firming down.

The best time for repotting is in the spring, but not if a plant is in flower. Most orchids commence their new growth at this time, and the ideal moment to repot is when the new growth is a few inches high. This is just before the formation of the new roots, which always appear after the new growth. When the new roots start to grow, they will immediately penetrate the fresh compost (growing medium), which eliminates any danger of damaging them. The next best time to repot is in autumn. This suits many cattleyas, which can often produce new roots at this time, as well as young seedlings, which need to be kept growing forward throughout the winter.

The advantages of these inorganic materials are that they are very light, easy to use, and, when the plants are repotted, the old mix can be left, causing less root disturbance.

The next day it will feel just right to work with. Do not return any unused damp compost to the bag, but leave it to dry out first. If it is returned to the bag while it is still wet, it will produce a mould, which will spread to the rest of the contents of the bag, Always store orchid compost dry.

Some orchid growers like to mix up their own special brand of orchid compost (growing medium) from locally available materials. These materials may include dried oak leaves and beech masts, mixed with live sphagnum moss. Tree Flower Pollination

Wind-pollinated plants produce vast amounts of pollen because most of it falls by the way and does not reach the flower and pistil. When the pine or spruce are in bloom huge clouds of pollen are carried by the wind and a layer of yellow dust covers the surface of nearby puddles and ponds. The pollen grains of most wind-pollinated trees have air sacs which make it possible for them to be carried as much as ten to twenty kilometres.

In the case of trees without air sacs (larch,Douglas fir, walnut) the pollen grains can be carried only several tens of metres and the trees produce a large number of barren seeds. Trees pollinated by insects produce a far smaller quantity of pollen, as more of the grains manage to reach their intended destination on the body of the insect.

Most plants are protected against being pollinated by their own pollen, for such in-breeding can result in less rugged individuals that are unable to hold their own in the struggle for survival. One such means of protection is the occurrence of male and female flowers on separate trees, another, the blossoming of male and female flowers on the same tree at different periods.

The quantity of seeds produced depends not only on the number of flowers but also on the weather conditions during the period of flowering and seed maturation. Frosts or rainy weather can prevent pollination or fertilization so that few or no seeds are set. Furthermore, some trees do not bear a good crop of seeds every year, for this requires a large quantity of reserve food supplies which the tree must build up over a period of time.

Trees producing large seeds and thus requiring larger food reserves (oak, beech, walnut) may only bear them at two to four year intervals. Again, in harsher climates, e.g. in high mountain regions or in the north, where a longer time is required to accumulate the necessary food stores, the seed-bearing intervals may be longer.

Species with both male and female flowers growing on the same tree (spruce, birch, alder) are termed itionoecious. Those where either only the male or only the female flowers occur on a single tree (yew, juniper, willow, poplar) are termed dioecious. If both bisexual and unisexual flowers occur, the tree is termed polygamous (ash).

The Cordon or Wall System of Growing Grapes

The strong-growing varieties can be grown as cordons if the site is warm and the soil good. The rows have to be 6 feet apart and the cordons 10 feet apart in the rows. The cordons are trained horizontally and thus stakes and wiring must be provided. Under this system a stake with a minimum diameter of 3 inches, and preferably chestnut, should, when 2 feet of its base has been thoroughly treated with Cuprinol, be driven into the ground securely so that the top is 2 feet 3 inches above soil level.

In the spring choose the stoutest and strongest growth and tie this perpendicularly to a stake. Cut out all other growths and concentrate on this one. Do not carry out any summer pruning, just let this strong rod develop naturally. Next January cut this rod back to within 3 buds of its base. When the 3 buds grow out, keep them, tying them to stakes or bamboos so as to form a goblet shape. Do not do any summer pruning.

Once again the vine is allowed to grow naturally the first year and then it is cut down to within two buds of its base. The strongest of the shoots that result is kept and is tied perpendicularly to a stout bamboo cane. All side growths that develop are pinched out with the thumb and forefinger to their base. When all the leaves have fallen, the long cane should first of all be tied to the stake and then should be carefully bent so that it can be tied along the lower wire. This bending of the cane, at an angle of 90 degrees, is important because the flow of sap is checked.

Do not, however, allow 12 rods to be produced or you may not be able to ripen the fruit. Stick to 6 or 7 rods tied to strong bamboos or stakes to form a goblet and gradually these shoots will bear more bunches of grapes up to, say, 8 per rod. Do not be tempted to reduce the pruning by cutting say to 5 buds, and do not be tempted either to try and make the vine crop more heavily.

Each of these laterals is allowed to bear one bunch of fruit this season. As the cordon is to remain tied horizontally to the lower wire, these laterals are pruned back in January to within one plump bud of their base. This bud, of course, will grow the next spring and once again the lateral will be trained upwards and tied to the top wire. This next year it will probably bear two good bunches and the year after maybe three bunches. From then on the crop will be three or four bunches per lateral.

Those who don't believe in straw mulching may like to know that the prunings and foliage of healthy vines may be roto-tilled shallowly into the soil, in November, and so help to keep up the humus content. By rotary hoeing you smash up the prunings which then soon decompose.

TWENTY ONE: Twenty One basically recounts an amazing true story about M.I.T. students who created a team of blackjack players that beat the casinos. These college kids prepared and then enacted an assault on the casinos. To beat the games in Vegas, where card counting can get you banned, they had to change casinos often, and disguise themselves, so they wouldn't get caught. Twenty One is based on the book that explains how these kids made millions playing blackjack.

THE DARK KNIGHT: This time Batman, and law enforcement officials, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. This has effectively reduced crime, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and starts a crime spree. Now, Batman really has his hands full, as the Joker has unleashed his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

TROPIC THUNDER: Filled with great actors the genre of the film is a classic spoof. Things are going bad. To get his super star cast to see the movie be a success, the seemingly bold director into the wild jungle, and leaves them on their own. He hopes to overwhelm them into producing a war classic, which will be caught on hidden cameras in the area. When the director blows up on an old French land mine, the spoiled actors are on there own, and they start acting, thinking it's a big set, but things are getting very, very real. Written, directed, and acted in, by Ben Stiller.

STEP BROTHERS: When two child-like older men, who each live with their single parents, will now have to share a room because their parents have wed, you can only imagine the mess. Having the combination of Reilly and Ferrell in those roles, and this has the makings for lots of laughs. This movie is a sure fire bet for a good time this year.

Jumper: Nearing death by drowning, David Rice discovers an amazing thing. He now knows he can actually teleport himself anywhere, anytime. Eventually, he discovers that he is not the only one that has this capability. After he becomes used to jumping around the world, he learns that there are people that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He must fight for his life, as the hunters believe he should die.

GET SMART: Maxwell Smart, as agent 86, is at it again, and he has us right where he wants us. It is about the evil organization (KAOS), vs the good guys (CONTROL), the shoe phone, and all the classic quotes. It's a trip down memory lane to look back at the antics of Maxwell Smart.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO: Rent is over due and Zack and Miri, life long platonic friends who live together, need to come up with some cash soon. What's their solution? Easy, make porno flicks. As you might expect this is a perfect environment for lots of laughs.

Is There a Cure for Shingles?

Everyone knows that shingles is a very debilitating and a painful experience. Because of this, a lot of people want to know how to prevent or cure it. What is the truth about so called shingles treatments?

To date, experts are still trying to determine whether there is indeed a cure for it or not. The truth is that the term "cure" may be a little too strong to use. Experts say that there is no real absolute cure for shingles. There is however, no need to despair because shingles can be treated and controlled.

There are already medications that can shorten the period of the condition and those that can help alleviate the pain. Studies also show that even though there is no cure for shingles, treatment can limit a person's chances of suffering from complications like post herpetic neuralgia and blindness.

Medication for Shingles

Anti virals cannot be seen as shingles cure because it cannot properly kill the virus. Proper medication however will step up the crusting and healing of shingles blisters by a number of days. Doctors usually prescribe anti viral medication combined with other pain relieving medications.

It is important to note that the earlier the treatment, the more effective and the quicker it can work. It is recommended that medical assistance be sought within 48-72 hours after the first signs of shingles emerge. The first signs are usually pain and some rashes.

Shingles Vaccine

Immunization used to be the only solution to reduce the risk of chicken pox. Recently, researchers have come up with a solution not as a cure for shingles but as a way of preventing it in people over 60 who have had chicken pox but not shingles.

There is a new vaccine, however, that has been recently found to reduce the incidence of shingles in the elderly and in people who are 60-69 years old. Nonetheless, the vaccine did not prevent shingles 100% in all the participants of the study. Science is still far from discovering a real effective cure for shingles.

Controlling the Spread of the Virus

People don't get shingles by mere contact. However, through direct contact with blisters, the virus can be spread to individuals who have never had chicken pox and have not been vaccinated. Common sense should therefore tell you that you should avoid direct contact with infants, children and pregnant women. In a lot of people who have had chicken pox, there is no need for direct contact with someone who has shingles to get shingles. A poor immune system is enough to trigger shingles.

Supporting Your Immune System

Not even healthy living can be a cure for shingles but it can promote shingles prevention and help with shingles treatment. Make sure that you cut down on smoking and drinking too much alcohol. You should also cut your stress levels since stress can affect your immune system. It would also do your body a lot of good if you exercised regularly and ate a balanced diet with foods rich in vitamins and minerals.

Trees and shrubs are perennial plants whose stems become woody and last for many years. Trees usually have a single erect stem or trunk which at a certain height branches out to form a crown, whereas shrubs branch from near to, or at, ground level.

Trees and shrubs are also differentiated according to height. Small trees attain, a height of about eight metres, those of the second category fifteen to twenty-four metres, and those of the first category more than twenty-five metres. The thickness of a tree is usually given by the diameter of the trunk measured at breast height, i.e. 1.3 metres above ground.

The forest provided primitive man with food, fuel and building material, affording him also protection against enemies and the elements. To realize the importance of trees and forests for man, however, there is no need to go so far back into the past. Even our great-grandfathers could say that trees and their wood were man's companions from birth to death - from wooden cradle to wooden coffin. Man used wood to build houses and make furniture, construct household utensils, tools and vehicles, and shape primitive weapons. Until almost the eighteenth century wood was also the only source of heat and energy.

A further good means of identification in some trees are the short, peg-like projections known as spurs (cherry, apple) on which the flower buds are borne. Some trees' twigs have distinctive large or small leaf scars which remain after the leaves falhe horseshoe-shaped ones of horse chestnut are noteworthy.

Spines and thorns are another good means of identification, e.g. on the twigs of the wild pear, black locust and honey locust. The twigs of other trees have conspicuous lenticels (bird-cherry, white ash), waxy warts (birches) or corky plates (hedge maple and smooth-leaved elm).

Under normal conditions trees are the strongest and fittest members of the plant realm.
