The red oak is a native of North America, where it grows in mixed stands, with other broad-leaved woody plants, from the 35th parallel northward to Canada. It is a robust tree, reaching a height of 35 metres. When grown in the open, it develops a broad cro,A1 with strong branches. The bark remains smooth and grey-green until an advanced age. The lobed leaves turn dark red in autumn, hence its name. The acorns mature in the autumn of the second year. They are not as popular a food with forest animals as other acorns, because of the sharp point at their tip.

It grows to an age of 600 to 800 years and, in the open, develops a huge trunk and broad crown. Under ideal conditions, heights of 40 metres can be attained: Up to about 20 to 30 years of age the bark is smooth and grey, in older trees it tends to become blackish-grey and deeply furrowed. The leaves are alternate with a lobed margin.

Because of its characteristics, it is sometimes planted in Europe for forestry purposes and is also a very popular ornamental for parks and gardens. It is more shade-tolerant than European oaks. The timber is heavy, with red-brown heartwood, and is used for the same purpose as European oaks, though its quality is not as good.

The wych elm is distributed throughout most of Europe, from Spain northward to the 65th parallel, and eastward as far as the Urals. It is found both in lowland country and high up in the mountains, even above the 1000 metre mark, most frequently in moist ravines, alongside streams and in scree woods with rich soil. The wych elm is a robust tree growing up to a height of 40 metres and developing a long, cylindrical bole topped by a rounded crown. The hark is ridged with shallow longitudinal furrows.

Much like the common oak, the durmast oak tends to be somewhat smaller with a narrower crown. It has a similar range, but does not extend as far cast to regions with severe winters. Unlike the common oak it is a tree of the hills and is found at elevations up to 700 metres. It does not require soil as rich as the common oak, and even tolerates stony, acid soils. However, it requires plenty of light to thrive well. The durmast oak reaches a height of 30 to 40 metres, and its trunk is straighter than, but not as thick as, that of the common oak. The flowers, appearing 10 to 14 days later than those of the common oak, resemble them, but the female flowers, unlike those of its relative, are pressed close to the twig. The mature acorns are borne on very short stalks close to the twig.

The wych elm is a tree that requires partial shade, and is marked by rich natural reproduction from seed, as well as a good growth of stump suckers. At lower elevations, it is often attacked by a fungus disease that causes branches to die out. The medium heavy timber, with brownish heartwood, is used to make furniture, waggons, and other products.

The shape and the structure of the leaves of conifers, called needles, are different. They are narrow, elongate and either rhomboid, semi-circular or elliptical in cross-section in order to limit transpiration as much as possible.

Between the xylem and the phloem, there is a thin layer, called the cambium, consisting of several layers of thin-walled cells which, during the growth period, rapidly divide to form new wood on the inside and new phloem on the outside.

The primary vein divides the blade into two, generally equal, halves. In some woody plants, however, the halves are not identical, especially at the base, and these are termed asymmetric (elm, hackberry). In other species the leaf may have several veins branching out from the base (maples); such leaves are usually palmately lobed.

The strip of compact summer wood is easily distinguished from the strip of the following year's spring wood so that on a stump we can clearly see the yearly growth, in the form of annual rings, and thus easily determine the age of the felled tree.

The pine leaves live for a shorter time than those of the spruce; and leaves of a spruce growing at low elevations live longer than those growing in harsh conditions.

The process is slow and gradual, and the tree sappears unchanged. Only the amount of needles on the ground beneath i serves as an indication of its shedding rate.

For apricots there must be some shelter from cold winds. There must be protection from the spring frosts, and there must be sufficient depths to the soil. Some people say that the spring frosts not only kill the blossom but damage the young wood and so start the die- back.

The trees grown by me have never been fed and they have made tremendous growth. They presumably get what they need from the compost-fed crops nearby. Where soils arc acid, carbonate of lime must be given, so as to bring the pH to 7.

Blackberries, of course, grow on their own roots and are not budded or grafted on to stocks. Blackberries grow very well indeed on the compost system. It pays to apply straw a foot deep or more not only between the rows but among the plants and thus there is no hoeing or forking to do. Such straw should be applied at the end of the first year, once it is known that the canes are growing well.

Each early March a fish manure with a 6 per cent potash content should be applied at the rate of about 3 oz, to the sq. yard, or 6 cwt. per acre. This should be put on top of the straw and be allowed to trickle through or wash in. If it is thought the canes are not growing clay, however, I prefer to plant early in the spring. This results in the least amount of loss.

Large Early Mount Gauiet Moorpark is perhaps the most famous of the true English apricots. Fruits largish brown-orange-yellow with brownish red on sunny side. Season late Aug.-early Sept.

Other raw materials yielded by trees are essential oils, rosin and turpentine. These are obtained from live trees by boring holes in the outer layer of wood or bark, and catching the oils in containers placed beneath them.

The best species of trees for this purpose are various pines, larches, and, in sub-tropical regions, members of the genera Agathis, Shorea and Canarium. Similar methods are used in the case of certain tropical, broad- leaved trees to obtain caoutchouc and latex, which are of importance in the rubber, textile and food industries - trees of the genera Hevea, Castilloa, Mimusops, Achras, etc.

In the furniture industry, it is mainly the wood of broad-leaved trees such as oak, elm, walnut, ash, beech, cherry arid certain tropical exotics that is used to make the finer, more delicate pieces. When to Put Orchids Outside

In countries with a temperate climate, it is safe to place those orchids that will benefit from the air outside in their pots by the end of late spring or the beginning of early summer.

The shade-loving genera can be accommodated beneath shade-cloth houses, which are open at the sides to allow air to flow through. This is the method used by commercial nurseries. Alternatively, the plants can be naturalized on trees in the garden. Here, once in position, they can grow into magnificent specimens with the minimum of care.

If you do not have a garden, your orchids can still enjoy the advantages of being outside for the summer. They are equally at home on a patio or even a balcony, provided they are shaded from direct sun during most of the day. Ideally, select a spot that is reached by either the early morning, the late afternoon or the evening sun only. This will ensure that the plants are in the shade during the hottest part of the day. Standing them against a white-washed wall will give them the added benefit of light reflected from behind. A roof garden may have just this situation.

By the end of the summer, usually coaching the end of early autumn, re nights become colder as the weather teriorates, and it is time to bring your plants back inside. Do this before the int frost appears, unless the orchids are bell protected by tree foliage above Vim, in which case they may stay out a ink longer, especially if the flower ikes are not yet showing.

Any orchids growing on a balcony outside your window may have to be brought inside for watering if surplus water may cause a problem. Avoid standing the orchids directly on the ground, where the pots will be subjected to infestation by all types of ground-dwelling pests. To prevent the orchids from being blown off their bench during very windy weather, it is a good idea to place a small railing around the edge.

Tidy up your orchids at the same time, removing all old bracts on the cymbidiums, and cutting off any broken or brown leaves. Pull out any weeds that have grown in the compost, including mosses and ferns; these may look nice growing with the orchids, but they will clog up the compost, making watering more difficult.

The yellow Promenaea xanthina has been reintroduced on to this tree in its native Brazil where it naturally grows on the lower trunk of trees at high altitude in cloud-filled, humid rainforests.

The aspen is a forest tree, occurring widely throughout the whole of Europe, and extending beyond the Arctic Circle in the north. In central Europe it grows in lowland and on mountains up to and above 1000 metres; it is most plentiful, however, in hill country, coppice forests and forests which are clear-felled.

It reaches heights of 25 to 30 metres and has a sparse, highly placed crown. The bark is smooth and coloured greenish grey, but old trees have fissured blackish bark at the lower part of the trunk. The buds on the twigs are lustrous-brown and sharply pointed. The aspen is a dioecious species (male and female flowers on separate trees). It flowers in March and the tiny seeds, imbedded in cottonwool-like hairs, are shed in late May. The leaf stalk is long and flattened, and even a slight breeze sets the leaf in motion. The aspen is a light-demanding tree and does not require rich soil.

Of the Asian cypresses, the one most commonly found in Europe is the sawara cypress (Chamaecyparis pisifera Sieb et Zuec.), which has a great number of ornamental forms.

The twigs are yellow-brown to brown, the buds covered with a layer of balsam resin. The flowers and fruit are very much like those of the white poplar. The balsam poplar is a light-demanding tree that requires considerable moisture.

In Europe it is cultivated mainly in parks for its ornamental, light-coloured bark and pleasant scent in spring. Planted occasionally in hill country is the western balsam poplar (Populus trichocarpa Torr. et Grey), a native of western North America. A northern Chinese poplar (Populus simouii Carr.), a native of China and Manchuria, is more frequently planted as a street and shade tree in European cities.

It is an attractive ornamental, with whitish bark, and nearly rhombic, 10 cm long leaves, which appear on the tree in early spring.

Beetroot also responds favourably to applications of sodium chloride in the region of 300-500 kg/ha. High temperatures, over 25C, adversely affect growth and roots are likely to show distinct zonal markings as a result of high soil temperatures. Plants grown in moderate rainfall conditions are unlikely to require additional water but irrigation is required during dry periods to maintain a regular rate of root development. An elevation of more than 600 m is normally required for successful root development, plants grown at sea level are unlikely to produce economic yields.

Propagation is normally by means of small corms, as for Colocasia, although the tops of young plants are often removed and inserted as cuttings. Rooted cuttings or corms are planted on low ridges 75-90 cm apart, 90 cm between plants; the more vigorous forms may require a wider spacing. Approximately 2.5-5.0 t/ha of corms are required for planting. Earthing up is considered advantageous during the early part of the growing period, possibly followed by mulching during hot weather.

Harvesting of the young shoots may normally begin 55-70 days from trans- planting, continuing at regular intervals for approximately six months. The shoots removed are normally 15-25 cm in length; flowering shoots should also be removed to encourage continued leaf production. Yield: Variable but, depending on the cultivar characteristics and the frequency of harvest, single plants may yield up to 1.5 kg of fresh leaves and young shoots over a period of 180 days.

Mature corms do not deteriorate if left in the ground and it is a common practice to harvest corms for immediate consumption as required. Considerable care should be taken to avoid damage to the corms at harvest time since this may lead to rapid deterioration. Corms may be stored in well-ventilated conditions for up to 180 days. Storage at 7C and 80% relative humidity has been found to maintain corms in good condition, without loss of eating quality, for about 120-130 days. Traditional pit storage is generally more satisfactory than ventilated room or barn storage.

It is often mistakenly thought that orchids need a constant temperature in which to grow, yet nowhere in nature does the temperature remain the same both night and day, summer and winter. Wherever orchids originate in the world, there exists a temperature fluctuation, and in cultivation orchids can withstand considerable temperature differences. Indeed, these variations are often the trigger that initiates flowering and regulates growth.

In more severe cases, direct sun will burn the leaves, causing black areas where the sun's rays have destroyed the leaf cells.

Insufficient light, on the other hand, will create dark green leaves that can become over-extended and limp. The aim should be to give your orchids just enough light to produce a good mid-green, healthy foliage and pseudo bulbs that will develop flower spikes at the right time.

The minimum temperature is that experienced on winter nights, and indoors some form of artificial heating will be required to maintain that. A drop of a few degrees is not going to cause any harm, but if the winter night temperature is consistently lower by more than 3C (5F), the plants will suffer. Also, in colder temperatures other problems can arise, such as molds and damp spots on the orchids.

The summer daytime maximum should not exceed 30C (86F), which is a comfortable temperature for the orchids. Above this, the plants will inevitably become stressed, and growth will slow down and may even come to a stop. Overheating can be difficult to prevent in a greenhouse and needs to be controlled by sufficient ventilation, shading and damping down.

After their winter's rest, orchids commence their new growth in the spring. Repot the plants as soon as this happens and before the new roots start at the base.

In addition to the organic composts (growing mediums), there are a number of man-made materials that provide synthetic alternatives. These are cheap and easy to use, and have the advantage in that they will not decompose and therefore cause the roots to rot.

These materials include Rockwool, which is produced for the horticultural industry from spun volcanic pumice. Rockwool looks like discoloured cotton wool, and the surface is sometimes stained green with an algae that grows in response to the nutrients.

On average, orchids need repotting about once every two years. Older established plants may be left for longer, especially when they do not outgrow their pots, while young plants need to be moved on every six months or so in order to maintain a steady rate of growth.

It is available in two forms: absorbent and non-absorbent. The first retains much more water around the roots, which suits some orchids, while a drier compost is provided by the nonabsorbent type. Many growers like to mix the two together to provide an ideal medium that holds sufficient water over an extended period, but has the capacity to support pockets of air. Rockwool is poured lightly into the pot and needs no firming down.

The best time for repotting is in the spring, but not if a plant is in flower. Most orchids commence their new growth at this time, and the ideal moment to repot is when the new growth is a few inches high. This is just before the formation of the new roots, which always appear after the new growth. When the new roots start to grow, they will immediately penetrate the fresh compost (growing medium), which eliminates any danger of damaging them. The next best time to repot is in autumn. This suits many cattleyas, which can often produce new roots at this time, as well as young seedlings, which need to be kept growing forward throughout the winter.

The advantages of these inorganic materials are that they are very light, easy to use, and, when the plants are repotted, the old mix can be left, causing less root disturbance.

The next day it will feel just right to work with. Do not return any unused damp compost to the bag, but leave it to dry out first. If it is returned to the bag while it is still wet, it will produce a mould, which will spread to the rest of the contents of the bag, Always store orchid compost dry.

Wind-pollinated plants produce vast amounts of pollen because most of it falls by the way and does not reach the flower and pistil. When the pine or spruce are in bloom huge clouds of pollen are carried by the wind and a layer of yellow dust covers the surface of nearby puddles and ponds. The pollen grains of most wind-pollinated trees have air sacs which make it possible for them to be carried as much as ten to twenty kilometres.

In the case of trees without air sacs (larch,Douglas fir, walnut) the pollen grains can be carried only several tens of metres and the trees produce a large number of barren seeds. Trees pollinated by insects produce a far smaller quantity of pollen, as more of the grains manage to reach their intended destination on the body of the insect.

Most plants are protected against being pollinated by their own pollen, for such in-breeding can result in less rugged individuals that are unable to hold their own in the struggle for survival. One such means of protection is the occurrence of male and female flowers on separate trees, another, the blossoming of male and female flowers on the same tree at different periods.

The quantity of seeds produced depends not only on the number of flowers but also on the weather conditions during the period of flowering and seed maturation. Frosts or rainy weather can prevent pollination or fertilization so that few or no seeds are set. Furthermore, some trees do not bear a good crop of seeds every year, for this requires a large quantity of reserve food supplies which the tree must build up over a period of time.

Trees producing large seeds and thus requiring larger food reserves (oak, beech, walnut) may only bear them at two to four year intervals. Again, in harsher climates, e.g. in high mountain regions or in the north, where a longer time is required to accumulate the necessary food stores, the seed-bearing intervals may be longer.

Species with both male and female flowers growing on the same tree (spruce, birch, alder) are termed itionoecious. Those where either only the male or only the female flowers occur on a single tree (yew, juniper, willow, poplar) are termed dioecious. If both bisexual and unisexual flowers occur, the tree is termed polygamous (ash).

The Cordon or Wall System of Growing Grapes

The strong-growing varieties can be grown as cordons if the site is warm and the soil good. The rows have to be 6 feet apart and the cordons 10 feet apart in the rows. The cordons are trained horizontally and thus stakes and wiring must be provided. Under this system a stake with a minimum diameter of 3 inches, and preferably chestnut, should, when 2 feet of its base has been thoroughly treated with Cuprinol, be driven into the ground securely so that the top is 2 feet 3 inches above soil level.

In the spring choose the stoutest and strongest growth and tie this perpendicularly to a stake. Cut out all other growths and concentrate on this one. Do not carry out any summer pruning, just let this strong rod develop naturally. Next January cut this rod back to within 3 buds of its base. When the 3 buds grow out, keep them, tying them to stakes or bamboos so as to form a goblet shape. Do not do any summer pruning.

Once again the vine is allowed to grow naturally the first year and then it is cut down to within two buds of its base. The strongest of the shoots that result is kept and is tied perpendicularly to a stout bamboo cane. All side growths that develop are pinched out with the thumb and forefinger to their base. When all the leaves have fallen, the long cane should first of all be tied to the stake and then should be carefully bent so that it can be tied along the lower wire. This bending of the cane, at an angle of 90 degrees, is important because the flow of sap is checked.

Do not, however, allow 12 rods to be produced or you may not be able to ripen the fruit. Stick to 6 or 7 rods tied to strong bamboos or stakes to form a goblet and gradually these shoots will bear more bunches of grapes up to, say, 8 per rod. Do not be tempted to reduce the pruning by cutting say to 5 buds, and do not be tempted either to try and make the vine crop more heavily.

Each of these laterals is allowed to bear one bunch of fruit this season. As the cordon is to remain tied horizontally to the lower wire, these laterals are pruned back in January to within one plump bud of their base. This bud, of course, will grow the next spring and once again the lateral will be trained upwards and tied to the top wire. This next year it will probably bear two good bunches and the year after maybe three bunches. From then on the crop will be three or four bunches per lateral.

Those who don't believe in straw mulching may like to know that the prunings and foliage of healthy vines may be roto-tilled shallowly into the soil, in November, and so help to keep up the humus content. By rotary hoeing you smash up the prunings which then soon decompose.

Twenty One is based on the book that explains how these kids made millions playing blackjack.

THE DARK KNIGHT: This time Batman, and law enforcement officials, have been taking down the criminal elements of the city. This has effectively reduced crime, but now a new super criminal arrives on the scene, and starts a crime spree. Now, Batman really has his hands full, as the Joker has unleashed his criminal insanity on Gotham City.

TROPIC THUNDER: Filled with great actors the genre of the film is a classic spoof. Things are going bad. To get his super star cast to see the movie be a success, the seemingly bold director into the wild jungle, and leaves them on their own. He hopes to overwhelm them into producing a war classic, which will be caught on hidden cameras in the area. When the director blows up on an old French land mine, the spoiled actors are on there own, and they start acting, thinking it's a big set, but things are getting very, very real. Written, directed, and acted in, by Ben Stiller.

STEP BROTHERS: When two child-like older men, who each live with their single parents, will now have to share a room because their parents have wed, you can only imagine the mess. Having the combination of Reilly and Ferrell in those roles, and this has the makings for lots of laughs. This movie is a sure fire bet for a good time this year.

Jumper: Nearing death by drowning, David Rice discovers an amazing thing. He now knows he can actually teleport himself anywhere, anytime. Eventually, he discovers that he is not the only one that has this capability. After he becomes used to jumping around the world, he learns that there are people that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He must fight for his life, as the hunters believe he should die.

GET SMART: Maxwell Smart, as agent 86, is at it again, and he has us right where he wants us. It is about the evil organization (KAOS), vs the good guys (CONTROL), the shoe phone, and all the classic quotes. It's a trip down memory lane to look back at the antics of Maxwell Smart.

Although each new species was greeted with enthusiasm, the first hybrids that appeared were met with both amazement and scepticism, for such an achievement was once thought impossible.

The first great heyday of orchid cultivation in Europe had been brought to an abrupt end. Following the war years, the coastal region of California from Los Angeles to San Francisco became an important orchid haven. In the warm climate, they could flourish out of doors with shade-cloth for protection from direct sun. This was a far cry from the long, cold winters in most of Europe.

Cattleyas and phalaenopsis were found to do well in this climate and could be grown with no expensive heating bills. The same was true in New Zealand and parts of Australia, whose climate favoured cymbidiums, enabling them to be grown without artificial heating.

Every third year, the World Orchid Conference Committee stages an event that alternates its venue between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This sustained interest in orchids has resulted in the publication of many volumes written for the beginner and specialized grower.

Progress was slow until the botanists realized that orchids grew in conjunction with a microscopic fungus, without which the seed would not germinate. Following this discovery, in around 1903, the Frenchman Noel Bernard isolated the fungus and placed it in sterile flasks on an agar base on which the seed was sown.

Interest had shifted from the declining estates, where few owners could now afford to maintain such large collections for pleasure, to the wider population.

Amateur societies dedicated to the advance of orchid cultivation started up, and in the United States the American Orchid Society was founded in 1921. This organization grew from small beginnings to a worldwide network, becoming the largest orchid society in the world.

In the 1920s, a further step was taken by L. Knudsen, an American scientist who bypassed the natural fungus and produced the nutrients artificially, using a technique that is still used, with a few modifications, today.

At the onset of the Second World War, the best of the British stud plants, which were the finest of their kind in the world, were shipped to California, South Africa and Australia for safekeeping. Cymbidium hybrids, in particular, were to prove vital to the newly emerging orchid nurseries in these countries, giving them a much-needed boost to their own breeding lines. The most coveted were C. Alexanderi 'Westonbirt' FCC/RHS (white), the most famous Cymbidium of all time; C. Burgundian 'Chateau' FCC/RHS (bronze) and C. Rosanne 'Pinkie' FCC/RI IS (pink).

Are Different Types Of Paper Essential For Painting?...

The correct answer is it can be very important. For watercolours, for instance, you have three main types. "Rough," "Hot Pressed", known as HP like the sauce, and "Not" or "Cold Pressed". So, what do we know about them?

If, all this is new to you I would recommend "Not". Simply because it is a smooth paper, not really textured, as when it is made, it is pressed through rollers that are cold.

If you have small detailed work, a textured paper really is what you need. "HP" would be my choice as it is nice and smooth as it has been pressed through hot rollers, like an iron in fact. Washes do not hold very well on this, so I wouldn't even try to do one.

Rough is a very well textured paper which can be very effective as the paint does not always reach the raised surface. Probably not good for a beginner to use though.

You can also stretch paper yourself, but you need to know how. If paper is wet, it does stretch, but not usually so that it will be equal the four ways. So you can have problems with wrinkling!

Here I will explain how to stretch paper. This you should always do first. Collect together the following items. A smallish bowl with water in, a natural sponge, scissors, plus brown gummed paper on the roll.

Cut four strips of the gummed paper, making sure that they are longer than the four sides of your paper. Then you need to, with your sponge, wet it completely in the bowl and in turn, wet your paper.

On a flat surface you need to start to flatten it out to get your smooth surface with the side of your hand. You need to start from the centre and move outwards. After this, tape all four sides down with your gummed strips.

At this stage it may worry you by still looking wrinkled, but if you leave the paper to dry naturally it will dry flat. Now, the surface you paint on, is called the support. For watercolours this is easy to buy, cheap and light.

The support used is very important for your work. You will find this out, for instance, when you see whether your brush moves well over it, if the paint works well on it and also if it remains on the surface.

The Importance of Wet Suits

The wetsuit is the accessory that symbolizes today's scuba diving, along with fins and a tank. They have come a long way since their earlier days of suit pioneers like the O'Neill brothers and their Santa Cruz surf suits to being made from a combination of neoprene rubber and synthetic fabrics. Wetsuits today contain a combination of a wide variety of fabric weaves, designs, colors, and different types of material densities. There are loads of brands to choose from, each offering their own unique properties on one of the most important parts of the scuba divers outfit, especially if diving in temperate or moderately deep waters is planned.

History of Wetsuits

Rubber skins were what the first wetsuits were made of. These were worn to keep in heat and protect the skin. They soon gave way to more advanced suits made of neoprene, whose cellular construction allowed air and water to be trapped allowing heating that was better than rubber. However, the early editions of neoprene had its downside. It became easy to tear and quite a struggle to put on. Often dressing required applying talcum powder to the inside of the suit. After several generations, breakthrough lines such as Sharkskin and Turtleskin brands added a layer of nylon sheeting to the inner suit and textured surface to increase strength and durability.

Combinations of Lycra or other synthetic materials are used in modern wetsuits to replace the nylon sheeting. Brands such as the Pinnacle Aquatic lines feature combinations of titanium weaves and natural merino wool which increases durability, warmth, and reduces odors. Layers of thicker material are also used in these modern suits to protect the sensitive neck and spine areas, and contain reinforced knee and elbow pads to protect the diver against chafing against rocks and coral heads.

How It Works

Water flows into the small pores of the neoprene foam of the suit where it is trapped and warmed by the body heat and exertions of the diver. The layer of warm water keeps the cold water from reaching the divers body by acting as a thermos bottle. The wetsuits are designed to let water come in contact with the skin. This is in contrast to the dry suit which keeps all water out. Wetsuits are usually used in waters whose temperatures range from 40 to 60 degrees. Dry suits are used in waters whose temperatures are much lower.

Wet Suit Types

There are many different types of wetsuits besides the well-known full suit. "Shorty" suits have full torsos, but do not cover the entire leg and arm areas. These suits are good for warm water conditions, where the main issue is maintaining body heat at greater depths. The "Farmer John" style (now less popular than in the late 80s when it was invented) has a thickened "pants" layer that goes up around the shoulders, but doesn't cover the arms; this type is good for surfing applications where knee protection is important. In addition, there are now specialized "thin suits" for competition swimming and light dive applications; these suits offer streamlining and abrasion protection more than they do temperature control.

The Hoods

The hood is the next important accessory to a full wetsuit. Its important because over 25% of body heat is lost through the head. They are often made of similar materials to a wetsuit but are thicker to prevent loss of heat around such a sensitive area. Most of the hoods have long bibs that tuck within the neck of the wetsuit to protect against a gush of cold water down the neck.

Booties

Even though some wetsuits have integrated feet, most use separate booties that are drawn up over the legs of the wetsuit. These are usually corrugated and reinforced to allow divers to stand or push off against rough surfaces.

The Gloves

Another important addition is the Gloves. They must not only protect against cold water but must also stop sharp coral and rocks from damaging the skin. Diving gloves also have textured fingertips to help in handling gear or other objects during a dive.

Wrap Up

Ever since its early primitive rubber casing days in the early 1950s, the wetsuit has come a long way. Wetsuits will continue advance and offer divers many new options for their diving experience with new materials and special computer-aided designs.

It is important never to summer prune the leaders or end growths of a branch. It is better to brutt than to cut with a knife, as neat pruning with a sharp blade may encourage secondary growths, which are just a waste of sap. Summer prunings may always be placed on the compost heap and be sprinkled with an activator like poultry droppings or fish manure. Winter prunings are too woody, so should be burnt, and the wood ashes sprinkled around the bushes afterwards.

Some people like to have redcurrants as half-standards. They grow them with a stem 3 feet tall and at that height allow the branches to develop in the normal way. By pruning back the side growths on the main stem it is possible to have fruit being borne right the way up this stem as well as on the branches. A half-standard redcurrant has the advantage of taking tip little room for other bushes may be grown underneath. Some gardeners have been glad to have them in a shrub border, for when they are covered with bunches of glistening crimson berries, in the summer, they are very pretty indeed. It must be remembered, however, that birds go for them and they usually need to be protected in some way for that reason.

Fay's Prolific is a good old-fashioned early variety. A heavy cropper with long bunches of large berries. Useless, however, in windy situation, because the side shoots are apt to blow off. Season early. Lacton No.1 is a good flavoured early variety. A regular heavy cropper with long bunches of large, excellent, crimson berries. A great favourite of mine. Season late.

It is unlikely that the redcurrants would suffer from nitrogen starvation if hoof and horn meal were applied all over the area at 3 oz. to the sq. yard each mid-February, while if there were signs of lack of potash, wood ashes could be used. (If the prunings are burnt each winter and the ashes are passed back to the trees, all should be well-unless the soil is sandy and so perhaps very low in potash.)

Red Lake is quite popular because it is an upright, moderately vigorous grower. It is a heavy regular cropper with brightly coloured berries. Season mid. Rivers' Late Red is included because it is the best late red. A rather spreading bush with fairly long bunches of bright red fruit. Season late. Wilson's Long Bunch is a medium-sized fruits being borne on long bunches, as its name suggests. Quite a strong upright grower. Season late.

Birds sometimes cause trouble by pecking out the buds in the early spring, and when this happens the bushes must be heavily black-cottoned to keep them away. Pick the red and white currants when the berries are of a good clear colour. Gather the whole bunch at one time. Go over the bushes, however, three or four times so as to be able to pick the berries in the right condition. Unfortunately, birds go for red currants more than any other fruit in the garden, and therefore to be successful with them many people grow them in a fruit cage.

The needles are flattened, and stand out all around the twig. The bark of old trees is divided into thick ridges separated by deep fissures. The Douglas fir likes partial shade, and is adapted to a long vegetation period and light frosts. It finds optimal conditions in areas with a coastal climate, in Great Britain, Denmark, northern Germany and France.

The Scots pine is widespread throughout most of Europe from Spain and Greece to the Polar Circle in the north, and to Siberia in the east. It is an important ornamental as well as forest tree. It attains heights of 30 to 40 metres and the crown is placed high up on the trunk. The bark is thick and furrowed on the lower part of the trunk and an attractive orange-brown on the upper part. The deep root system provides it with good anchorage, making it possible for it to grow even on steep, stone cliffs and in sandy situations. The needles grow in pairs.

The silver fir is one of the largest of European trees, reaching heights of more than 60 metres in virgin forests and living for five hundred years. Its name is derived from the smooth, silvery-grey bark. The buds are non-resinous. The needles are arranged in two opposite ranks on the twig, leaving a circular leaf scar upon falling. The yellow male flowers are clustered on the underside of the previous year's shoots. the female flowers, resembling small green candles, are borne on the upper part of the crown. By autumn they develop into cylindrical cones that mature in late September and then disintegrate.

Smelly flowers spark police raid

Police raided the home of an elderly couple in Bristol, England because a flowery plant in their garden smelled like pot.

Ivor and Margaret Wiltshire of Kingswood had just returned home from a holiday when they found their front door kicked in. The entire house and garage was searched.

The raid was apparently sparked by the smell of a tiny creeping flower called Moss Phlox that grew in their garden. The plant smells like and is often mistaken for pot.

This was the second time this happened. A similar incident occurred four days earlier to Ivor's neighbors David and Christine Difford.

The couple was visited by a gang wearing Halloween masks who demanded drugs.

"They shouted, 'Give us the weed, man' and searched the loft. It was frightening," David narrated.

Police later apologized to Ivor, a retired engineer, who showed them the smelly plant. The offending plant apparently didn't bother Ivor since he has no sense of smell.

"It is estimated that about four percent of the world's adult population (162 million) use cannabis annually and 0.6 percent (22.5 million) daily. The possession, use, or sale of psychoactive cannabis products became illegal in most parts of the world in the early 20th century. Since then, some countries have intensified the enforcement of cannabis prohibition while others have reduced the priority of enforcement," according to the editors of Wikipedia.

Moss Phlox, on the other hand, is scientifically known as Phlox stolonifera and is also called creeping phlox, flowering moss, ground pink, or moss pinks.

It is native to the eastern United States in forests in the Appalachian Mountains from Pennsylvania south to northern Georgia.

"We can't believe such a small plant has caused so much trouble," Ivor said.

The leaves of woody plants consist of the stalk or petiole and the lamina or blade. The petiole facilitates movement and positioning of the leaf. The blade is the part where photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration take place.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide is the tree's main source of food. Together with water and by the means of chlorophyll and radiant energy from the sun it is processed by the leaf cells into organic compounds that go into building the major part of the tree's organs. This must take place on the greatest possible leaf surface, which is why the leaves of woody plants are so thin, and why a mature tree has tens or hundreds of thousands of them.

To make the most of the sun's energy the leaves are spread out as advantageously as possible, this being aided both by the complex network of branches and by the varying lengths and positions of the stalks.

In comparison with non-woody plants they have the great advantage of height and longevity. Before man introduced intensive land cultivation most of the Earth's surface was covered with forests. Even today the forest would soon reclaim the land, should man cease to tend and cultivate it. This is borne out not only by examples in tropical Africa and southeast Asia, but also by all the lands in Europe that have been left lying fallow.

Only where insufficient rainfall, high temperatures or severe winters and frozen soil prevent the growth of trees do they leave such areas to grass, shrubs and succulents.

Probably a native of India, but possibly originating in other parts of Southeast Asia. The earliest known distribution was from India to Egypt about 2000 years ago, from where it was introduced into Europe. From Spain, the Coco yam was taken to the New World and may have been later introduced into West Africa from tropical America. Sea and land trading routes from Egypt and North Africa probably resulted in the establishment of the Cocoyam in East Africa. The eastward distribution from India to the Pacific was also successful.

The Cocoyam is now widely distributed throughout the tropics and is grown commercially in Egypt. It has become an important food crop in the West Indies and Hawaii where many forms and varieties are widely cultivated. In West Africa, Cocoyams have a wider range of tolerance to the climate than species of Dioscorea and the crop is grown on an appreciable scale in southern and eastern Nigeria, Ghana and other West African countries.

A tall-growing, perennial herb, up to 4 m in height. Corm: cylindrical, large, slow in development, arising as a thickening of the stem base. Leaves: sagittate, large, erect, up to 1.5 m in length; petioles long, up to 10 cm in diameter and often spiny at the base. Flowers: large, tubular, thickened purple spathe; spadix with hermaphrodite flowers. Fruit: berries containing seeds in cultivated forms.

Adapted to growing on a wide range of soil type in moist, shady situations, sometimes in swamps, and will tolerate brackish conditions. Areas of high rainfall and humidity are most suitable for the production of high yields.

Propagation is by corms or sections of corms, each weighing 50-140 g, planted during the wet season after they have begun sprouting. In some areas, corms and cormels are planted together, but they may also be planted separately. In the Pacific area, the top portion of the main corm is used for propagation and this method is claimed to give higher yields. In the Philippines, where Taro is grown on a commercial scale, the lowland forms are planted in rice paddies prepared in much the same way as they are for rice. The sprouted corms of vigorous cultivars are planted in rows 120 cm apart, with 60 cm between plants; less vigorous cultivars are established with 90 cm between rows and 45 cm between plants in the row.

The corms are carefully cleaned and stored in heaps, preferably in well-ventilated sheds.

They may lose up to 25% of their weight during the first month of storage but may be successfully stored for several months at 10 Celsius.

The leaves and young shoots are used, particularly in the West Indies, as a cooked vegetable and in stews; the corms and cormels are roasted, fried, baked or boiled. A steamed pudding, 'poi', prepared from grated Taro and coconut is popular in Hawaii. The leaves are a good source of vitamin A; also calcium and potassium.

Goodbye Norman Mailer

When I woke up Saturday morning and opened up the computer the first thing I saw was that Norman Mailer had died at 84. I closed the computer, and didn't open it again until the next day. Norman Mailer was a hero of mine, and a lot of my heroes are starting to leave.

Norman and I didn't agree on many issues, but I think that still doesn't matter. He was one of those rare people who aren't afraid to write on what they want to write. He was fearless.

I spent the rest of the day trying to remember what Norman had done. I couldn't help but recall the 1948 book entitled The Naked and the Dead, which I have read around the year 1969, when I was 16.

I enjoyed reading his first book that I even anticipated for his upcoming new publications. I believe I have read every one of them. Whenever he would appear on television, I would usually sit back and watch him on TV. He was a very interesting person indeed, and that makes him rather different among other writers, and personalities on TV.

It was on Charlie Rose when I last saw him. There was also another show wherein he appeared, but then, I couldn't remember what was it called. As for Norman Mailer by that time, he had hard hearing, but was amazingly full of high spirits. It's rather disappointing that the shows didn't spare him too much time to appear on air.

I am one of the people who disapproved of his politics, but I learned to forgive him eventually. The liberals were just too different compared to Norman Mailer. He stood firm for his beliefs.

Norman, just like any other famous personality, also became a subject among publications and critics. But he didn't care, and they just continued on writing and criticizing him.

I enjoyed his last book, The Castle In The Forest, and he had plans for a trilogy of the work on Hitler.

I could still remember the moment when Norman was about to appear in Charlie Rose. I admit that I was really excited to see him again.

The disappointment I felt on Saturday was crushing. No trilogy. Another hero gone.

But on Sunday I felt better. Norman Mailer would have defended your right to protect yourself. He knew where all the weasels in his chosen party were. I doubt he had any respect for them, because he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that they had no courage at all, that they were, and are paper tigers.

Because he could write fearlessly, they couldn't

Norman Mailer was a real man, and a brave one, too.

I think I could imagine how heaven is doing right now, with Norman Mailer around.

So, I guess, if God needs somebody to keep Him on his toes, Norman Mailer would be up for the job.

Silver Birch

The grey alder is primarily a tree of northern Europe. In central and southern Europe it grows in the mountains, mainly in the region of the Alps and Carpathians. It attains a height of only 15 to 20 metres and has smooth grey bark even in old age, its life span being a maximum of 60 to 100 years. The flowers appear in spring about fourteen days before those of the black poplar, the cones and seeds maturing in late September. The seed is light brown with a broad, encircling wing. The grey alder has a shallow root system, and is marked not only by vigorous production of stump suckers, but also by root suckers, especially in the northern parts of its range.

It attains heights of 20 to 25 metres and develops a slim bole topped with a crown of slender, pendent branches. It has a fairly short life span, attaining an age of 100 to 200 years. The twigs are covered with waxy warts. The bark is white and smooth, becoming blackish and fissured at the base. The flowers appear in April, and the fruits mature in June, being gradually dispersed great distances by the wind until the onset of winter. This, plus the fact that the tree grows well even on poor soils, makes it an important colonist of forest clearings, pastures and fallow land. The silver birch is a light-demanding species and stands up well to both frost and the sun's heat. The white trunk and fresh green of its spring foliage make it an ornamental element in the landscape.

The beech is a slow- growing tree whose fallen leaves enrich the soil and in certain areas it is marked by abundant natural propagation by seed. The hard wood is used to make furniture, parquet flooring, sleepers and cellulose. Its ornamental forms are often planted in parks.

The bark is smooth and greenish-grey, even in old trees. The buds, unlike those of the beech, are 10 mm long at the most, and pressed close to the twig. The leaves are alternate. The male and female catkins appear in May after the leaves, the fruit matures in late September. The seed does not germinate till the spring of the second year after sowing. The hornbeam is a prolific seeder and is marked by vigorous, natural regeneration.

It is easily recognized in winter by the narrowly ovoid, stalked, violet-brown buds. The broad obovate leaves arc sticky in spring. The Lowers, arranged in catkins, are already formed by the autumn and open in early spring (March), the female ones developing by autumn into woody cones with small winged nutlets. These are equipped with buoyant tissues that enable them to be carried great distances by air or water.

Because it stands up well to cutting back and has dense foliage, it has been much used in landscape gardening, mainly as tall hedges and for topiary. The wood is heavy and hard, and is used for tools and building constructions.

Creating the Right Conditions to Grow Orchids

Fresh air is important at all times to prevent the air inside the greenhouse from becoming stagnant. Ventilation also controls the temperature and helps to prevent overheating. In early spring, there will be days when the increasing power of the sun heats up the greenhouse with amazing speed, and it will be necessary to open the ventilators to prevent a sudden rise in temperature (although, even with ventilators, this will be difficult to reduce until the sun goes off the greenhouse).

Bear in mind that these plants will have to be taken down for watering to prevent too much surplus water from splashing on to the plants below.

During this time, if additional ventilation is needed, you can safely open the door to create an even greater flow of air. However, if you do this, you may want to install a gauze-lined inner door to prevent cats from wandering into the greenhouse. It is also a good idea to install an alarm system for when the door is open and the greenhouse left unlocked.

Behind these, on either side of the greenhouse, attach wires or wooden trellis to the inside of the glass on which to hang orchids that grow on slabs of bark. The end of the greenhouse can be used to grow further orchids permanently on a small tree or branch.

Creating the right conditions for the orchids is a combination of providing humidity, warmth and fresh air. These three important factors must always balance each other, so that the atmosphere always feels right when you enter the greenhouse.

Orchids like to be warm and comfortable, and only when there is an imbalance of these conditions, resulting in either a cold and damp atmosphere, or a hot and dry one, at the other extreme, will problems arise.

To heat a conservatory or sun lounge, itstall an extra loop off the domestic melting system. A strategically placed radiator or two, with their own thermostat controlling a small pump, will provide heat whenever required. As the domestic system will already be producing heat from a central boiler, be it mains gas, electricity or oil, the added cost of heating the conservatory is not as great as having a separate heating system. Use two thermostats, one to control the night temperature - set just above the minimum required - and the other to control the day temperature, along with a time clock to differentiate between the two. It is essential to install a maximum/ minimum thermometer next to the thermostat as they are notoriously inaccurate.

By double checking the thermostat with the thermometer, you will be able to provide a more accurately controlled temperature. Checking the Temperature Heating in winter is the most essential part of orchid growing. While the plants can survive being dry for short periods, they will suffer if they get too cold. One bitterly cold night without heat can seriously harm the orchids. Monitor the heating continually, by making it part of a daily inspection. Check that the daily temperature is correct by consulting a maximum/ minimum thermometer, and keep a record so that you build up a pattern showing the average and also noting any severe drops. You can then adjust the thermostat accordingly.

Mountain Ash and Whitebeam

The mountain ash grows in western and central Europe from lowland to high mountain elevations up to the tree line, and, in northern Europe, even beyond the Arctic Circle. It is resistant to frost, thrives on poorer soils and is important as a pioneer tree which, because it is distributed by birds, quickly covers burned and logged areas. It reaches a height of only 15 to 20 metres. The bark is smooth and grey-brown, the buds are elongate, dark brown with greyish hairs.

The white flowers appear in May, developing by autumn into bright red berries the size of a pea, which are a great favourite of birds. The tree's Latin name aucuparia - avis capere indicates that the berries were used by bird-catchers to bait their traps. The mountain ash also has a cultivated variety with larger, sweet fruit, S. a. edulius (syn. (kids), grown in northern or mountainous regions for their fruit, which is used to make compotes, and jams.

It needs a warmer climate than the apple, and usually grows on the margins of forests and on sun-warmed slopes up to an elevation of 400 to 500 metres. It may attain an age of 200 to 250 years. The wood is hard, fine-grained with a pink tinge, and is used to make furniture. The fruit is eaten by birds and forest animals. The leaves of some trees turn bright red in autumn.

The whitebeam is widespread in southern, central and western Europe, including Great Britain, the southern tip of Sweden marking the northernmost limit of its range. Throughout this area, however, it occurs fairly sparsely. A light-demanding and warmth-loving species, it is often found growing on chalk or limestone hills facing south. Formula : 1 oz. nicotine in 10 gallons of water pro rata. It is quite a useful thing also when buying young plants to dip them in a solution of nicotine before planting out. Wear rubber gloves while the dipping process is taking place and be careful not to inhale the fumes.

Holes are bored in the bottom of the barrel to provide drainage, and larger holes-say, 3 inches across-are cut into the side of the barrels to admit the strawberry plants. In such a barrel as I have described four rows of six holes can be made in such a way that they are not exactly above one another.

Do not, whatever you do, neglect the heavy dressing of organic matter needed by the strawberry, and remember that whereas, for most market garden crops, old well-rotted dung is used at the rate of 20 tons to the acre, the good strawberry growers of north-west Kent (where I lived for years) thought nothing of using such dung at 50 tons to the acre for strawberries. Start then by making the bed as rich as possible and then use the mulches advised in order to keep up the humus content.

Of course, it is necessary to see that the barrel is standing on some bricks before the soil is put in, so as to allow good drainage, and to ensure that the hoops are good. During the summer plenty of water will have to be given if the plants are going to be able to crop heavily. It may be necessary, by the way, to give some extra support to the top of the barrel by using a strong length of wire and twisting it round tightly.

The Swiss mountain pine is a sun-loving tree that thrives in poorer, shallower soils. Its chief importance is as protection against avalanches and soil erosion. The decumbent form is very popular as an ornamental tree.

The jack pine reaches a height of only about 20 to 25 metres and has a relatively short life span, about a hundred years. It forms two whorls of branches each year. It differs from the Scots pine in having short, pale-green needles, black bark with scaly ridges extending up to the crown, and small, strongly incurved cones.

The Arolla pine has thick, rust coloured, downy shoots and needles clustered densely on the twigs. The cones take two years to mature and when ripe in September they fall to the ground where they disintegrate. The sweet oily seeds are a favourite of birds and rodents. New individuals grow from the seeds they drop on their way, often far from the parent tree. The Arolla pine has a slow rate of growth; not until after its sixtieth year does it begin to flower and bear fruit, but it attains an age of several hundred years. It is adapted to the harsh, mountain climate and stands up well to frost, windstorms and heavy snow. The wood is strong and light, and was formerly used to make furniture and carved objects.

In sunny situations it is affected by changes in temperature, and sometimes frost causes it to dry up. Its many ornamental forms make it particularly desirable for park landscaping.

The rows can be 2 feet apart an.d the plants set out 18 inches apart in the rows. Those who allow runners to root in between the rows and so cultivate strawberries on what is called the matted-bed system, often have the rows 3 feet apart, with the plants 15 inches apart in the rows.

The small-leaved lime is widespread throughout most of Europe, extending northwards to Sweden, and eastwards to the Urals. In western and central Europe it occurs in oak forests in lowland and hill country. It also grows as a scattered tree in riverine forests, and is plentiful in scree woods.

It grows to a height of 25 to 30 metres and, under forest competition, develops a long, straight bole; open-grown forms have a short, stout trunk with large, broadly ovoid crown. It may live to an age of 500 to 800 years. Centuries-old solitary trees in the country afford not only shade and respite from the heat, but also a lovely sight for the eyes to feast on. The small-leaved lime is one of the latest-flowering trees.

When the yellowish-green flowers appear in July, their heady fragrance spreads far and wide. They are visited by bees, and the tree is thus of importance for honey production. The rounded leaves have rusty hairs in the axils of the veins on the underside. The globose fruit has a smooth, thin shell. Small- leaved lime stands up well to hard pruning, and is highly prized for planting in avenues. The soft, whitish wood is used for making pencils and for woodcarvings. The bast fibres are used in gardening for tying, and for making plaited article.

The large-leaved lime is closely related to the small-leaved lime, and has a similar range of distribution. However, its northern boundary does not extend to the Baltic Sea, and, in the east, it occurs only as far as the western Ukraine. It is most plentiful in hilly country and foothills at elevations of 400 to 700 metres, though the occasional, single tree may be found up to 1000 metres above sea level. It occurs in broad-leaved woods and requires richer and moister soil than the small-leaved lime.

In winter, it is easily distinguished by robust twigs, large, sticky, red-brown opposite buds and horseshoe-shaped leaf scars. The palmately compound leaves appear in early spring and the white flowers, spotted yellow and red, appear in May, making the horse- chestnut look like a lighted Christmas tree. In autumn, the flowers are succeeded by leathery, thorny fruits about 5 centimetres long, which split to release one to two polished reddish-brown seeds or "conkers". These are often gathered by children and in the forests are a favourite food of red and roe deer.

The main characteristics that make it easy to distinguish the one from the other are the underside of the leaf, the period of flowering and the shape of the fruit. In the wild they frequently hybridize to produce the hybrid Tilia eurolmea L. (intermedia DC), which blends the characters of both parents.

As a general guide, apply feed added to the water at every second or third watering. By using plain water in between the feeds, any leftover chemicals in the compost (growing medium) will be washed through, avoiding the build-up of any residue. Feed very sparingly during the winter and more liberally in summer, when there is better light and higher temperatures to balance the extra nutrients being supplied.

Orchids growing in an inorganic compound such as Rock wool or stone wool may be given more applications of feed than those growing in a bark or peat mix. An additional foliage feed to provide nutrients through the leaves, can be given occasionally during summer; this also applies to plants that have lost their roots and cannot be fed via the compost (growing medium).

Some manufacturers produce two types of orchid fertilizer. The first is a high-nitrogen feed used to promote growth at the start of the growing season. Later, when the growth has matured, this is replaced by a phosphate-based formula to encourage flowering. Whether this system is preferable to giving a balanced feed throughout the year is debatable, but growers can try out which suits their needs and their orchids best. Always follow the manufacturers' instructions and read the label carefully.

Orchids are perennial plants, with a life span of many years. Their rate of growth is slow, and any artificial feeding has to reflect this. The extra nutrients are given not to increase the rate at which orchids grow or to influence their growing cycle, but to maintain a steady momentum and to ensure health and vigor. The first growers to experiment with feeding orchids were those employed by the private estates, whose owners had the best collections at that time.

They used what was at hand, and this happened to be dried animal droppings. This was rubbed through a sieve and mixed with compost (growing medium). This proved very successful with the deciduous calanthes, which have a short, fast growing season.

Do not be tempted to place too many seedlings in one larger pot, because if an infection starts it can run through every plant and all will be lost. Spray the seedlings for a few dam before watering the compost. Do this in the morning with a rising tempers sure.

Early fertilizers consisted of horn and hoof or bone meal powder, which was mixed with the compost (growing medium) at the time of potting or placed in a large tub of water and allowed to ferment.

You will notice a change in the appearance of the plants as they adapt, and, once they are growing strongly, you cam start feeding at every watering. Chet. your seedlings regularly and remove any dead leaves or plants immediately to prevent the spread of rots.

Plants are normally mature enough for harvesting 60-120 days from planting, depending on the characteristics of the cultivar. An average yield of 20 t/ha may be obtained. Seeds are rarely produced in short days and high temperatures. The leaves should be crisp, clean and free from discoloration. There should be six sub main veins going direct from the main vein to a spikelet at the side of the leaf and in all this top lobe there should be thirteen little spikelets on either side. A reverted bush must be dug up and burnt, for there is no cure; and, furthermore, the trouble can spread easily through insect visitors.

If the stems of the blackcurrant bushes suddenly wilt, the blackcurrant shoot moth caterpillar must be suspected. A tunnel will be found in the centre of the shoot made by a small caterpillar. The only way to get rid of this pest is to cut all the branches down to within an inch of ground level, in the spring, and so to sacrifice the crop for one year.

Leaf spot can cause premature defoliation, especially in wet seasons. Spraying with colloidal copper wash has proved a good method of control. The Rust disease usually comes from the Weymouth Pine after picking probably, and it is never advisable therefore to grow blackcurrants in proximity to this tree.

Technique Of Shadows In Still Life Drawings Explained!

People who are new to still life probably place their emphasis on drawing the main objects. This is not really probably the best line to take, as normally the shadows are what will enhance your drawing.

Shadows can make your drawing, so they are vital to your work. To readily achieve these results you will require the following items. An eraser, your pencils, of course, a sheet of cartridge paper and some mounting board.

Now you really need a backdrop for your painting, so this is where the mounting board comes in. This board, when it is set up, needs to be able to include all the shadows, so do not skimp on the board, it has to be large enough for this.

So now you have your backdrop, you can put your chosen objects in front of it. Maybe something like bread and cheese with a plate with a knife on it or even a bunch of bananas. You then need a lamp of some sort to cast shadows, for instance from the right side.

So you are ready to go and you have your backdrop! Take a 2B pencil and draw very lightly squares on to your cartridge paper, one and a half inches. When this is complete, do the same on your backdrop, only in three inch squares and heavier pencil pressure.

Check how the shadows actually fall on the screen. This is easy to see, as they will be dark. However, you need to do this before you start drawing.

What do you do now? Sort out your positive and negative objects. The negative being your objects and the positive being your actual shadows. So go for drawing your shadows first.

If you work on the shadows, it transforms the shape of your picture. So take a 2B pencil and on the far left draw the shadow outlines. Now watch where the shadow outline crosses your boxes so that you can do this on your paper.

You may not get it quite the same, so don't get disappointed. Carry on filling in your shadow outline. It is surprising, the forms your picture takes.

Once you have completed your shadows, you can very lightly rub out some of your boxes that are within the shapes of your shadows. Only rub lightly though, or you will ruin the paper surface.

Filling in the dark shadows now is your next step. At this stage you could smudge your picture inadvertently, so I would have my hand on a piece of paper whilst doing this. You may have a few white gaps in between the dark areas, this is alright.

Filling in shadows I would do with a 6B pencil and cross hatch it. If you haven't read about this method in one of my previous articles, this is where you draw a series of lines across one way, followed by lines going down over them. In other words, to fill in, don't just scribble across your paper.

Outline the back objects with a 2B pencil. Slowly complete the outlines of all your objects. Just make sure your pencil is sharp. Now it is possible to rub out your boxes with objects inside. What you are left with, is both positive and negative shapes.

Still using the 2B pencil, on the darker parts of your objects, do some light cross hatching. Do not try to hard, try it on the edges for example.

Bear in mind you need some light tones too in your work. To finish it, use the 2B pencil to light hatch, just don't do too much so that it intermingles with the shadows. Good Luck!

The Sun God festival is a yearly festival at the University of California in San Diego that usually starts during the sixth or seventh week of Spring. It is held by the members of the Associated Students Programming office. The event is usually held with a large concern of independent bands, mostly amateur, novice with some mid-level skill bands. One or two mainstream bands are also in the festival to kick the intensity up a notch. Some of the popular people and groups who were able to earn a name for themselves were Busta Rhymes, Social Distortion, Gwen Stefani and My Chemical Romance.

The festival was held to provide a venue to let the students socialize to the point of bacchanal revelry. For a school that fails at socialization, it is a welcoming point to an almost-dead school. Still, there's the authority to keep people (and substance abuse) in check. Beer drinking and public displays of affections are just some of the few things you might see during the festivities; testaments to the pent up frustrations of the students (and some of the teachers too).

The festival usually has booths made up of the different student organizations in the area. There's food (for those lazy to bring their own), drinks (common fan favorite), information (if you get lost) and games (fairs usually have them).

A lesser known event is the Junkyard Derby Downhill Race, where both student and faculty can create downhill racers from old rust buckets.

The festival happens around Mid-May. Don't forget to bring the usual anti-mosquito lotions and jackets. It's highly unlikely to get cold, as the heat and the action gets intense as the night turns late.

As a matter of fact you kill two birds with one stone buy purchasing an M-box by Pro-Tools. Not only would that allow you to record onto your computer and come with the software to do that, you could use it for live performances as well.

So does ease of use and setup time become more important than the overall quality of sounds and add ons? Plus how can you argue against the fact that this is turning your computer into a home studio. Yes, some workstations can do some simple recordings but it will not create a demo for your band to add to myspace.

Some good examples of software would be anything by Native Instruments. Also my absolute favorite libraries are made by East West. They record all of their sounds using the highest quality of mics, recorded by professionals and convert them to individual wav files. With a midi controller you can be John Williams and score your own soundtrack with just one piece of software.

Now to the main concern of most, what will each cost me? If portability is a must then a laptop is a must as well. If you do not have one then your overall price of a software setup will go way up. You will probably spend between 1 to 4 thousand dollars on a quality workstation so if a laptop is not needed then it is probably cheaper to go with a software setup.

If you total up the price of a keyboard controller, sound-card, and software you will probably be well under a thousand dollars on your total purchase. You do have to consider that some software can be very expensive and how many different pieces you decide to get is what will really determine what your completed price will be. Now that we have looked at both scenarios, hopefully you will be able to make a better choice as to which setup will be right for you.
